The Definition of Insanity

Someone once said "The definition of insanity is to do the same thing over and over again and expect different results".  This phrase clearly describes gun control policies in Chicago.

Chicago has one of the highest murder rates in the nation, as well as a high violent crime rate, and also the strictest gun control policies in the country.  Concealed carry has been illegal for decades.  Citizens are unable to defend themselves without breaking the law and the criminals know this.

There have even been a few instances where a victim shot a would-be robber and the police refused to press charges, though that does not always happen.

A few years ago, a couple of off-duty officers from suburban Markham were attacked when they answered a Craigslist ad for a used car.  The armed officers were able to thwart the attack without being harmed.  The suburban police chief remarked "You think about regular citizens and you feel bad because it's like a no-win situation for them.  You know, they're not police officers, they're not trained for this type of incident."

Indeed.

Let's Get Serious About Protecting Ourselves

Like many issues, our country has two very distinct views about security and violence. There are those who believe that if guns were totally eliminated, there would be less crime because people would not have access to firearms. Others believe that "the best defense is a good offense" and being prepared is equal to being protected.

The first belief relies on people's inner goodness (a questionable quality indeed) and stupidity. It assumes that people kill only because they have found an easy way to do it, and not because they have chosen to do evil, or are so insane they are not aware of the consequences of their actions. And it also assumes they're not smart enough to figure out other ways to kill.

The second belief relies on the idea that there will always be people willing to rape, rob and murder, and it might be best to be prepared to defend oneself in the unfortunate event of meeting such a person.

Studies have shown that limiting gun ownership actually increases murder and suicide rates. http://theacru.org/acru/harvard_study_gun_control_is_counterproductive/ http://www.law.harvard.edu/students/orgs/jlpp/Vol30_No2_KatesMauseronline.pdf
People are ingenious; if a gun is not handy, there are other ways of getting the job done. Look at Cain and Abel.

It's sad to think that we need to put so much effort into protecting ourselves, but we can no longer afford to put our heads into the sand and pretend that all is goodness and light around us.
